A New Relationship with the Maa-nulth
The Premier welcomed the five Maa-nulth First Nations on November 21 to celebrate the introduction of legislation for Vancouver Island's first modern-day treaty. The agreement provides a capital transfer of $73.1 million, annual resource revenue payments averaging $1.2 million for 25 years, and land. The treaty recognizes Aboriginal rights and title, defines rights regarding ownership and management of lands and resources, includes self-government provisions, and phases-out tax exemptions.
